Port Charlotte Resident is Brother of Newly Elected Pope

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — As the Catholic Church marks a historic milestone with the election of its first American pope, a quiet neighborhood in Port Charlotte, Florida, has suddenly found itself connected to the global spotlight. Louis Prevost, a Navy veteran and longtime resident of the area, is the brother of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago.

The announcement of Pope Leo XIV’s election came as a surprise to many, but for Louis, it was a deeply personal and emotional moment. Growing up in Dolton, Illinois, Louis and his younger brother Robert shared a strong family bond and a foundation of faith. Even as a child, Robert showed a clear sense of spiritual direction, something the family jokingly acknowledged when they teased him about someday becoming pope.

Now, that once-lighthearted teasing has become reality. From his Port Charlotte home, Louis watched the events unfold on television. While the community around him celebrated the broader significance of an American pope, Louis felt pride on a more intimate level, knowing the man behind the papal title.

Louis describes his brother as a man of compassion, humility, and global perspective. With years of ministry experience across several continents, Pope Leo XIV brings a strong pastoral presence to his new role, grounded in a life of service to the Church and its people.

Although Louis has not yet spoken with his brother since the election, he looks forward to reuniting with him in Rome when he is well enough to travel. As Port Charlotte residents learn more about their papal connection, many are offering congratulations and expressing pride in having a direct link to such a momentous occasion in Church history.

For Louis Prevost, the news is not just historic — it’s deeply personal. His brother is now the leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide, but to him, he’s still simply Rob — the younger brother he’s proud to call family.
