DeSoto County Schools Highlight Safety During National School Bus Safety Week
This week, DeSoto County Schools are joining districts across the country in observing National School Bus Safety Week, an effort to remind the community about the importance of keeping students safe on the way to and from school.
With hundreds of students in DeSoto County relying on bus transportation each day, school officials and law enforcement are urging drivers to use extra caution, especially during morning and afternoon pick-up times.
Florida law is clear: all drivers must stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended and red lights flashing, unless traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway with a raised median. Passing a stopped school bus is not only dangerous but also carries significant penalties.
DeSoto County Schools are using this week to reinforce bus safety with students and to thank bus drivers for their role in ensuring safe transportation. Parents are also encouraged to review safety tips with their children, such as waiting at least 10 feet from the road and always crossing in front of the bus where the driver can see them.
“National School Bus Safety Week is a good reminder that protecting children is a responsibility shared by everyone on the road,” officials said.
