Wanted Suspect Apprehended After Multi-County Pursuit

CHARLOTTE COUNTY – A joint operation between the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) led to the arrest of wanted suspect Philip McBurney on Monday, following a high-speed pursuit across county lines.

According to CCSO, detectives attempted to take McBurney into custody when he rammed two sheriff’s office vehicles before fleeing at a high rate of speed. No injuries were reported.

Narcotics detectives from both agencies coordinated efforts, and as McBurney crossed into DeSoto County, DCSO detectives were positioned to intercept. McBurney eventually abandoned his vehicle near SW Terrell Street in DeSoto County, where deputies quickly established a perimeter. He was located a short distance away and taken into custody.

Charges include:
CCSO: fleeing to elude law enforcement, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, and driving without a valid license.
DCSO: parole warrant, possession of a controlled substance (amphetamine), possession of marijuana (under 20 grams), possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting an officer without violence, and driving without a valid license.

Sheriff Potter commended the teamwork between both agencies, noting that their coordination ensured the case was resolved safely.
