Drought Dilemma: Sarasota County’s New Water Rules Will Leave You Thirsty for Change!

SHARE NOW

Sarasota County is hitting the brakes on water use, and it’s not just a suggestion—it’s the law! As drought conditions grip the Sunshine State, officials from the Southwest Florida Water Management District announced some of the strictest water restrictions since 2017. If you’re a resident, get ready for a one-day-per-week lawn watering schedule, carefully orchestrated by your address. Imagine the drama of hustling to water your lawn in a short window while trying not to break any rules—stressful, right?

The new watering days depend on the last digit of your address, and the watering hours are limited: 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight. It’s a tight squeeze, especially for all you late night waterers! And just when you thought you could sneak a bit of extra watering in, enforcement gets serious. Starting on April 17, 2026, violators won’t be given a warning—fines will start flowing faster than our beloved aquifers can recharge.

As if that weren’t enough, outdoor and household water usage is also being monitored: hand watering is okay as long as it’s done in the morning or late evening, and commercial car washes are in the spotlight for recycling water. While it might feel like a struggle to keep those lawns green, this effort is necessary to protect the drinking water supply as we head into spring. So, stock up on your drought-tolerant plants and prepare to save those shower leftovers—because conserving water is now a community sport!
