What started as a routine police traffic stop on U.S. 301 North in Manatee County Wednesday night turned into an emergency rescue operation when two 17-year-old suspects fled from deputies in a stolen white Toyota Camry. Around 9:27 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle that had been reported stolen by Largo police. When they attempted to pull it over near a Sonic restaurant, the driver made a critical decision: instead of complying, he accelerated, jumped a concrete median, and took off through a nearby neighborhood. The Camry was later found abandoned on 80th Avenue East.
With aviation units and K-9 teams responding to establish a perimeter around the area, the situation quickly evolved into a rescue mission. Both teens fled on foot toward the Manatee River, and in a desperate attempt to evade arrest, they entered the water. This is when things became dangerous. One of the suspects began struggling in the current, prompting deputies to call for emergency assistance. A nearby citizen with a small boat responded to help, and law enforcement was able to safely rescue the struggling teenager from the water. Meanwhile, aviation deputies tracked the second teen, who was located with assistance from North River Fire personnel who transported a deputy by boat to his location.
Both suspects now face charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing to elude, trespassing in a conveyance, and resisting an officer without violence. One teen confessed to stealing the vehicle and committing multiple vehicle burglaries in the Largo area. The incident showcases the coordination between multiple agencies and the importance of community members stepping up when emergency situations unfold.
