Construction Worker Hit by Truck in Hit-and-Run: What Happened and Why Safety Matters

A construction worker in Outagamie County, Wisconsin experienced a frightening moment on Wednesday when a truck driver ignored traffic direction at a work zone and struck the worker with the truck’s side-view mirror. Rather than stopping to check on the injured worker, the driver continued driving away while making a rude gesture. Fortunately, a witness was able to capture the vehicle’s license plate, allowing authorities to identify the driver and file hit-and-run charges. The worker’s injuries are not life-threatening, and they are expected to return to work Friday.

This incident highlights a growing frustration many construction workers face on the job: aggressive and impatient drivers who see work zones as inconveniences rather than necessary safety measures. County Executive Tom Nelson addressed the situation directly, noting that while stress and fatigue are real, they don’t justify dangerous behavior toward people doing their jobs. “People are fried, short-tempered and cranky. But please, let’s not take it out on each other. Especially those just doing their job,” Nelson said. “We can do better.”

Construction workers face unique risks every day, standing in traffic to direct vehicles and keep work zones safe. If you find yourself frustrated at a construction site, remember that the flaggers and workers are there to protect everyone. Slow down, follow their directions, and treat them with the respect they deserve. What’s your experience been at construction zones? Have you noticed driver behavior changing over the years?
