A routine disagreement over boat traffic at South Gulf Cove Lock turned into assault, property damage, and alleged harassment in a matter of hours. On Sunday, July 12th, a boater became upset when lock operator John Minitello directed him to wait while a sailboat passed through first. The sailboat had priority due to water level changes and established safety protocols—standard procedure at any lock. Instead of accepting this, the boater climbed the ladder to the control area and pushed Minitello twice. Minitello, thinking quickly, recorded the incident on his Meta glasses, capturing video evidence of the physical confrontation.
What happened next shocked everyone involved. After returning to his vessel, the boater accelerated directly into the lock gates at full speed, causing his wife to be thrown into the water. Emergency services were called, and while neither occupant was seriously injured, the boat crash triggered investigations by both Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. The FWC cited the operator for violating navigational rules, and a boating accident investigation remains active. For lock operators and waterway workers across Florida, this incident highlights the dangers they face when the public refuses to accept safety directives.
The situation took an even more troubling turn the next day when the same boater allegedly returned to the lock in a vehicle, photographed Minitello and his car, and made threatening statements, including “You’ll be getting a visit.” This escalation from confrontation to alleged harassment prompted Minitello to file an additional report with the Sheriff’s Office. The investigation has been forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office. For those who use South Gulf Cove and other waterways in Charlotte County, this serves as a stark reminder that safety protocols exist for a reason, and confronting workers who enforce those protocols has serious consequences.
