Tasty Home Cookin’ opened its doors in Sarasota with a simple mission: serve great comfort food at prices families could actually afford. For 36 years, it delivered on that promise. Those three-burger specials for $1.29 seem like a distant memory now, a reminder of a time when operating a small restaurant didn’t require the kind of financial gymnastics it does today.
But like so many beloved local establishments across our community, rising operating costs eventually caught up with Tasty Home Cookin’. The family who owned and operated the diner made the difficult decision to close. What’s remarkable is how surprised the owners were by the outpouring of emotion from customers when news of the closure spread. The owner’s daughter, Lindsay Gilman, reflected on how deeply her parents’ dedication had woven the restaurant into Sarasota’s fabric. Before the restaurant officially closes for good, the owners are giving the community one last opportunity to be part of the story. They’re holding a clearout sale on July 19 and 20, offering equipment, furniture, and decor that long-time customers can take home as mementos. It’s a bittersweet way to say goodbye.
