A 47-year-old St. Petersburg city sanitation worker was fatally shot Wednesday around noon while sitting in her work vehicle on 12th Avenue South. The victim, a 12-year city employee, was killed in what police have confirmed was a targeted attack. The suspect and victim knew each other. She leaves behind four children and an entire community mourning the loss of a woman who had been part of St. Petersburg’s public service workforce for over a decade.
The suspect fled the scene immediately, prompting a Be On The Lookout alert from Florida Highway Patrol around 12:30 p.m. After being identified as potentially suicidal and involved in the homicide, authorities tracked him south toward Lee County. When troopers located the suspect on Interstate 75 near Alico Road and attempted to stop him, he refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside his vehicle. State troopers and Lee County Sheriff’s deputies established contact with the suspect, and after a tense standoff, he was taken into custody. The suspect sustained serious injuries during the incident, but fortunately, no law enforcement officers were harmed in the process. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the use of control by law enforcement.
