Florida’s two-day Lobster Mini-Season is almost here, running Wednesday, July 29 through Thursday, July 30. For divers and boaters across the Suncoast, from the beaches of Siesta Key to the piers of Venice, this is the prime window to catch spiny lobster for the table. But before you suit up, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a few rules you can’t afford to skip.
The bag limit is 12 lobsters per person per day on the Gulf coast — that’s double the limit in the Keys, where only six are allowed. Every lobster must have a carapace larger than three inches, and you must measure it while still in the water. Harvesting egg-bearing females is strictly prohibited. Gear is limited to nets and tickle sticks — no spearing or hooks. Night diving for lobsters is banned in Monroe County, and boats must idle within 300 feet of any diver-down flag. The U.S. Coast Guard also reminds everyone to shut off engines near swimmers and never operate a boat under the influence.
