A welfare check in Nacogdoches, Texas led to the arrest of 28-year-old Keosha Hubbard-Woodson, who now faces three counts of endangering a child. Police responding to the check found three children living in a home with no running water, an extreme amount of trash, human or animal feces, rotting food, and a significant insect infestation, according to an arrest affidavit. The children also had untreated medical conditions, including skin issues and severe stomach pain.
EMS treated the children at the scene, and Child Protective Services has since taken custody. Hubbard-Woodson is currently held in the Gregg County Jail without bond. The case raises difficult questions about how such conditions can go unnoticed by neighbors, teachers, and others who may have had contact with the family. It also highlights the critical role that welfare checks play in protecting vulnerable children.
For parents and community members here on the Suncoast, this story is a reminder to stay aware of the families around us.
