The Mid-American Conference has filed a formal appeal with the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff, challenging the outcome of Saturday’s Michigan-Western Michigan game. The Wolverines won 13-12 on a Hail Mary touchdown, but only after a replay official added one second back to the clock when both the stadium and television clocks had shown zeroes.
MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher stated that replay protocol was not properly followed, alleging the Big Ten replay crew used an incorrect clock feed. Western Michigan would have won 12-7 if the proper timekeeping had been used. Western Michigan University President Russ Kavalhuna has also spoken out, saying the conference can show respect for the game while asking serious questions. The Big Ten has not yet responded to the appeal.
This case raises significant questions about officiating oversight and whether final scores can be contested after the fact.
