It’s been twenty-five years since the September 11th attacks, and this Friday the Suncoast has a local place to remember. The Military Heritage Museum at 900 W. Marion Ave. in Punta Gorda hosts a 9/11 25th Commemoration Ceremony at 11 a.m. in its Gulf Theater, remembering the nearly 3,000 people killed and honoring the first responders who answered the call.
One of the most personal moments will come from Marion Kminek, who is scheduled to speak about her daughter, Mari-Rae Sopper. Mari-Rae died aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when it struck the Pentagon. Local first responders, veterans and community leaders are expected to take part in the ceremony as well.
The day continues after the ceremony. The museum’s “A Remembrance of 9/11” exhibit remains open for visitors, and “9/11: One Day in America” screens at 1 p.m. Whether you remember that morning vividly or you’re teaching a younger generation about it, this is a chance to reflect together as a community.
