A worker died at a Smithfield Foods meat facility in Monmouth, Illinois, and when management ordered production to continue that same day, dozens of employees walked out. One worker estimated at least 100 people left for the day, some visibly upset as they exited the plant. A worker also said this was the fourth death at the Monmouth facility, a claim that raises serious questions about conditions inside the plant.
OSHA and local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Smithfield Foods issued a statement saying the company is deeply saddened and cooperating with the investigation. Meanwhile, the walkout itself has become the story: workers who felt a colleague was treated, in one employee’s words, like he was just a number, and who decided the line could wait.
