Devin Hughes and Kayla Reynolds will each spend 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to more than ten felony counts, including torture and child abuse, in a case authorities describe as among the worst they have seen. The victim was Hughes’ 7-year-old niece. According to prosecutors, she was chained to a treadmill, starved, burned with vape pens, and forced to drink dirty toilet water inside the couple’s California mobile home.
She escaped in July 2025, running to a neighbor’s home covered in bruises, scars, burns, and a black eye. That single act of courage, and the neighbor who answered the door, ended the abuse and started the case that led to this week’s sentencing. The girl gained five pounds during her hospital stay and is now living with a family member, where authorities say she is thriving.
Cases like this one are hard to read about, but they raise a question worth sitting with here on the Suncoast: do we know the children in our own neighborhoods well enough to notice when something is wrong?
