The trading card market is booming, and with big money comes big problems. An InvestigateTV review of court records, news archives, and a fake-card tracking database found a surge in counterfeits that are hard to detect, sometimes selling for thousands of dollars. Collectors are chasing stars like Shohei Ohtani and Patrick Mahomes, plus fantasy favorites like Pokémon’s Mega Charizard and Magic the Gathering’s Sol Ring. Counterfeiters are chasing the same money, and they’ve gotten very good at it.
Thefts are climbing too. Shops, card conventions, and even the U.S. Mail are being targeted by thieves looking for high-value cards they can flip fast. If you’re buying or selling on the Suncoast, sticking with reputable dealers and getting valuable cards authenticated is the smart play.
