A Louisiana woman surrendered to authorities Thursday after police discovered 17 cats and kittens dead and 20 others in severe distress inside a Walker business called Waffles Way Home. Madison Rebecca Colello, 29, faces 17 felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and dozens of misdemeanor charges. Investigators say temperatures inside the building reached nearly 100 degrees, and the animals had no food or water. Her bond was set at $40,000. Deputies also searched a Denham Springs home tied to the case and found 11 kittens and an adult cat locked in a sweltering garage, where one kitten was later euthanized.
Walker Police Chief David Addison called the number of animals affected heartbreaking, and rescue volunteers from Rehome & Repeat stepped in to help the surviving cats. The investigation is ongoing and could expand to additional charges as authorities look at both locations. The case has drawn attention from animal welfare advocates who point to gaps in how cruelty cases are prosecuted and how quickly conditions can turn deadly when heat is involved.
