Deputies in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, responded to complaints about loose pigs on North Cafe Line Road and found far more than a nuisance. Forty pigs were living in substandard conditions with no access to food or water. Sheriff Jason Ard said one pig was dead and others were severely injured, and many had been escaping under a fence and wandering onto the roadway.
The owner, 27-year-old Malik Smith, was booked Friday, September 18, on seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and 33 counts of simple cruelty. Smith surrendered all 40 pigs, which were safely removed from the property. The investigation remains ongoing, and it’s still unclear which rescue organizations will absorb the cost of housing and rehabilitating that many animals at once.
