The U.S. Department of Transportation held its first Road Safety Innovation Expo in Washington on Friday, and the technology on display could eventually make its way to highways right here in the Suncoast. More than 40 exhibitors showed off inventions like solar-powered lane markings that glow without electricity, connected cones that communicate with each other, and virtual reality headsets that simulate dangerous driving scenarios. A traveling memorial greeted visitors at the entrance, honoring the thousands of lives lost on American roads each year.
The stakes are high. Officials say more than 36,000 people die on U.S. roadways annually. Federal Highway Administrator Sean McMaster said the only acceptable number of roadway deaths is zero. While that goal may sound ambitious, the expo demonstrated that engineers, researchers, and safety advocates are actively working toward it with real, tangible solutions.
