Satchel’s Last Resort Animal Sanctuary in Sarasota is tackling one of the quiet reasons dogs end up surrendered: behavior problems and the cost of fixing them. Through its Muzzle Outreach Program, families receive a free Baskerville Ultra muzzle and unlimited monthly one-on-one sessions with a Satchel’s trainer, all at no cost. The program’s goal is simple. Keep dogs in their homes before a behavioral issue turns into a shelter intake.
The training is built around positive enrichment rather than punishment. Dogs work on scent detection games and FitPaws canine biomechanics exercises, which build strength, balance, and confidence. The muzzle is presented as one tool in a larger plan, helping dogs stay calm and safe in situations that used to set them off. The sanctuary reports a 92% success rate at keeping participating dogs with their families, a number that means fewer surrenders and less pressure on shelters across the Suncoast.
