Siesta Key’s free trolley is one of the busiest routes in the entire Breeze transit system, and that popularity comes with a familiar side effect. When the trolley stops along a busy road during peak season, traffic stacks up behind it. A citizen task force looking at beautification and traffic on the island met Friday with Sarasota County Utilities and Breeze representatives, and a proposed pilot program took center stage: at least two designated trolley pull-off stops, one south of Stickney Point and one north of the public beach.
The goal isn’t just smoother traffic. Task force member Natalie Gutwein framed the bigger picture, saying the group wants to keep the Siesta Key vibe while giving the island a modern look. Friday’s meeting also covered water and sewer upgrades, so the task force’s recommendations will feed into a broader master plan for the island’s future.
That plan is still taking shape, and the public is invited to help shape it. The next task force meeting is Oct. 16 at Siesta Key Chapel.
