A North Dakota mother is facing four felony counts of reckless endangerment with extreme indifference after authorities say she drove her car toward a group of children following a dispute over her son’s bicycle. Ashley Jerome, 34, of Aneta, told Nelson County deputies she left work and went looking for the kids because her son said he was being bullied and his bike had been taken. Witnesses told investigators the neighborhood children had hidden the bike and returned it as a prank.
The accounts diverge on what happened next. One witness said Jerome’s car came within four to six feet of the group with the high beams on. Another said he believed the vehicle would hit him, and one child ran inside crying. Jerome disputed the speed estimates, telling deputies she was driving 35 to 40 mph rather than 55 to 60 mph. She was released after signing a promise to appear in court on October 24.
The case is stirring up a bigger conversation about bullying, parental instincts, and where a protective reaction becomes a criminal one. Kids’ pranks have a way of escalating, and parents on both sides of any neighborhood dispute often feel like they’re the only ones defending their child.
