Punta Gorda is one step closer to having its own hospital again. The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals recommended approval of parking variances for AdventHealth’s 17.46-acre campus off Jones Loop Road, clearing a key planning hurdle for a project that would restore local hospital access lost when ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda closed after flooding from hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024.
The campus is designed in phases. First comes a 12-bed off-site emergency department that could grow to 24 beds, followed by an 80-bed hospital and a two-story, 30,000-square-foot medical office building. AdventHealth announced the project in September 2025 and initially targeted the emergency department for the third quarter of 2027. Groundbreaking is expected in November, though the availability of construction materials could affect that schedule.
For residents of Punta Gorda, Charlotte Harbor, and the surrounding communities, this isn’t just a construction story. It’s about response times, access, and what it means to have care close by when every minute counts. What services would you most want to see at the new campus?
