Tony Romo’s run as CBS Sports’ lead NFL analyst is over. The network announced Friday that it and Romo mutually agreed to part ways after nine years, thanking him for his contributions over that stretch. Romo had been the voice of CBS’ top broadcast booth since moving from the Dallas Cowboys to television.
The departure follows a turbulent summer. Romo, 46, was arrested July 23 in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence, and CBS placed him on indefinite leave shortly after. On Sept. 1, he pleaded no contest to a civil offense for driving under the influence.
Now CBS faces a significant decision about who takes over its marquee NFL slot, one of the most visible jobs in sports broadcasting. The move also raises familiar questions about how public figures and networks handle off-field conduct. For football fans on the Suncoast, it’s another reminder that the fall season brings as much drama off the field as on it.
