A 23-year-old professional boxer is facing a first-degree murder charge after his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son died Tuesday in Mesa, Arizona. Kishawn Porter was arrested the same day the toddler was rushed to a hospital in medical distress. According to prosecutors, an autopsy revealed healing and acute rib fractures, a lacerated liver, a lacerated stomach, and blood in the abdomen. Investigators say Porter struck the child with his hands and a sandal.

The case grew more serious as details emerged in court. Prosecutors also accused Porter of abusing his own 1-year-old child, and pointed to prior juvenile adjudications for child molestation and aggravated assault. One Maricopa County prosecutor told the judge that beating and killing an infant indicates “an almost basic lack of humanity.” Porter’s bond was set at $1.5 million, and two combat sports promotions have already cut ties with him.

For families here on the Suncoast, the story raises a hard question: how often does abuse go unnoticed until it’s too late? Florida’s abuse hotline operates 24 hours a day, and reports can be made anonymously. If you’re worried about a child in your neighborhood, that call is free and it could matter more than you know.
