Sarasota Parking Division Moves Under Police Department October 28: What Drivers Need to Know

Downtown Sarasota’s parking operation is getting a new chain of command. Starting October 28, the city’s parking division will be overseen by the Sarasota Police Department, a shift City Manager Marlon Brown says is driven by employee safety, customer service, and stronger coordination in the field. Parking enforcement officers spend their days in busy streets and garages, often face to face with frustrated drivers, and the city believes police oversight will support them better.

Commissioner Liz Alpert backed the move, noting that enforcement officers effectively serve as the face of the city for many visitors. For anyone who parks near Main Street, the Bayfront, or St. Armands, the practical question is simple: what changes for you? Right now, the honest answer is that nobody knows. Payment methods, meter rates, and enforcement hours are all still undecided. This is a change in management, not a announced change in cost.

It also helps to know that Sarasota is not going it alone here. Venice and Bradenton already handle parking through their police departments, while North Port routes it through code enforcement. So the region has a playbook, and Sarasota is following it. The real test comes after October 28, when drivers and visitors see whether downtown parking feels any different.

What do you think? Should parking enforcement fall under the police department, or stay as a standalone city service? Let us know.
