A 3-year-old boy from Sulligent, Alabama, died Friday after his family’s dog attacked him at a home on Walnut Street, according to police. He was treated and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Sulligent Police Chief Michael Franklin confirmed the dog belonged to the family.
After the attack, the family surrendered the dog to police, who transported it to a veterinarian in Russellville for euthanasia. The health department ordered the animal be euthanized and tested, a standard step in fatal animal attacks. No charges have been announced, and authorities have not identified the family. So far, officials have not said what may have triggered the attack.
The story hits close to home for a region full of dog lovers, especially households where grandparents, kids and pets share the same space. Local veterinarians and animal control experts consistently offer the same guidance: never leave young children unattended with any dog, teach kids how to approach animals respectfully, and watch for behavior changes like growling, guarding food or toys, or sudden withdrawal. If your dog shows those signs, a conversation with a vet or a trainer is worth having.
