Sepsis is responsible for more than 350,000 adult deaths in the U.S. every year, plus roughly 1,800 children, and one in three hospital deaths involves it. That’s the scale of the problem a doctor in Kansas City, Missouri is now taking on, with a discovery that could sharply reduce those numbers. For Suncoast families who have spent long hours in hospitals here in Sarasota or Bradenton, a faster and more effective sepsis treatment can’t come soon enough.
Recovery is also the theme in Rowena, Oregon, where a June 2025 wildfire forced 8,000 evacuations and destroyed more than 56 homes. Months later, rebuilding is stalled by hazard trees, the charred trunks standing on private property that keep falling without warning. They’re a real, expensive barrier to getting families home.
Not every story this week is heavy. Malachi Henderson, a six-year-old in St. Louis County, finished the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge at his local library. There’s also the tale of the nation’s oldest bicycle factory and the family that refused to let it die. What would you like to hear more about on the air? Let us know.
