Equifax has agreed to a proposed $100 million settlement over a class action claiming it reported lower credit scores for roughly 4 million people in March and April 2022. If you were applying for a mortgage, financing a car, or opening a credit card during that window, there’s a real chance it affected you. Eligible customers were already sent a notice by email or regular mail.
The settlement pays between $95 and $280 depending on how many valid claims come in. Two dates matter more than anything else: Nov. 27 is the deadline to opt out, and Dec. 28 is the deadline to file a claim. You can submit online or by mail. Equifax denies any wrongdoing, and a final hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2027.
One detail worth understanding: these settlements split a fixed pot among everyone who files. More claimants means smaller individual checks, which is why people who were genuinely harmed should file rather than assume it isn’t worth the effort. Pull up that notice, or search the settlement details online, and get it handled before the holidays crowd out your calendar.
