A vote on a data center moratorium in Memphis will have to wait. The city council postponed the decision to October 20 after Tuesday night’s meeting spiraled, with a large crowd of residents on hand to oppose the projects. Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton was removed from the meeting after arguing with protesters and Councilman JB Smiley, and a fight with punches thrown broke out in the lobby while protesters chanted inside. Police made no arrests and reported no injuries, but the meeting was effectively over.
The core dispute isn’t going away. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, generate noise, and take up land, and residents increasingly want those trade-offs spelled out before approvals move forward. The postponed vote keeps the issue live in Memphis and signals that more protests are likely before the council reconvenes.
If you live on the Suncoast, this one is worth following. Data centers are expanding across Florida, and the same questions about power costs, water use, and neighborhood impact are landing in front of local boards here. How Memphis handles its October 20 vote could set the tone for how these fights play out in our own backyard. What’s your take: should local governments hit pause on data centers until the costs are clear?
