Christa Pike Awake After Failed Execution: Former Doctor Says He Isn’t Surprised

Christa Pike, a death row inmate in Tennessee, is alive and talking after her execution didn’t go as planned, according to her legal team. Former doctor Paul Allen said he wasn’t surprised by the outcome. In his view, the drug used, pentobarbital, likely would have killed her if medical staff hadn’t been called in when she didn’t die within the expected time frame.

The defense is now questioning whether the drug actually reached her vein. The Tennessee Department of Correction maintains it followed every step of its protocol. This is the second failed execution in Tennessee this year, and that’s raising serious questions about the future of capital punishment in the state. Pike’s legal team is asking the governor to change her sentence to life in prison.

There’s a lot still unanswered. Can an inmate who’s awake and talking still be executed? Did the failed attempt cause any brain damage? Those are legal and medical questions that won’t be settled quickly. But the bigger picture matters too: when a state’s own procedures fail twice in a single year, the public has a right to ask whether the system works at all.
