A DeSoto County man will spend the rest of his life in state prison for a killing that shook a small Southwest Florida community in 2021. Reginald Reynard Roberts Jr. was sentenced Monday for the murder of S.M. Saleh Ahmed, the owner of the Fiesta Food Mart. The life sentence took effect Oct. 6, according to court records.

For our Suncoast neighbors, this story carries extra weight. Convenience store owners are part of the daily fabric here, the people who greet you at 6 a.m. on your way to work and wave when you pull up after a long day. Prosecutors said Roberts shot Ahmed on May 14, 2021, then took money from an open safe. A jury convicted him in September of first-degree murder and robbery with discharge of a firearm after a trial that began Sept. 15 at the DeSoto County Courthouse and returned verdicts on Sept. 22.

The evidence that made the case was both simple and powerful. Store surveillance video captured the crime, and investigators identified Roberts through a thumbprint found on a box inside the safe, along with forensic testing and witness testimony. It took more than five years for the case to reach sentencing, which is not unusual for a first-degree murder prosecution.
