Durham Firefighter Killed in Roof Collapse: What Suncoast Residents Should Know About First Responder Risks

SHARE NOW

A Durham, North Carolina firefighter died Wednesday while crews fought a massive fire on Marly Drive, near Highway 70 and about ten minutes southeast of downtown. Part of the roof collapsed, causing the second floor to give way and trapping several firefighters on the first floor, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Two other firefighters were injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The loss echoes here on the Suncoast, where fire crews answer everything from hurricane aftermath calls to structure fires in aging beachside buildings. Departments across North Carolina, including Matthews Fire and EMS in the Charlotte area, have already offered support to the fallen firefighter’s family. It’s a reminder that the fire service operates like one large extended family, even across state lines.

If you want to help, a simple gesture goes a long way: thank a local crew, support first responder charities, or check your own home’s smoke alarms and escape plan. Building collapses during fires are among the most dangerous scenarios firefighters face, and prevention starts with the community. How do you honor first responders in your neighborhood?
