An 84-year-old woman died Friday afternoon when her SUV broke through a retaining wall on the fifth floor of a downtown Honolulu parking garage at 1088 Bishop Street and fell roughly five stories, landing upside down on Hotel Street. Police say she was wearing a seatbelt, and investigators have not confirmed whether speed, drugs, or alcohol played a role. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash also puts a spotlight on a number Honolulu is tracking closely. Oahu has now recorded four non-traffic fatalities this year, compared with zero at this same point in 2025. Non-traffic fatalities cover incidents like single-vehicle crashes and falls that never appear in standard traffic tallies, which is exactly why the jump is getting attention.
For Suncoast listeners, the story raises two practical questions. If you have an aging parent or neighbor who still drives, a simple ride-along can reveal more than a phone call ever will, and it opens the door to a plan before a crisis forces one. And if you park in a multi-level garage near the beaches or downtown, it is fair to ask when that structure was last inspected.
Have you ever had the driving conversation with a family member? How did you approach it?
