A Sarasota man is recovering in the hospital after a Sunday morning that began with gunfire at a McDonald’s drive-thru and ended with a standoff on Hoyer Drive. According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Casey King opened fire in the drive-thru line, then drove off. A witness, Ana Hernandez, told investigators he pointed his gun at her husband’s truck before he left.
What happened next helped deputies close the gap quickly. Hernandez followed King and gave 911 his license plate number. Deputies tracked that plate to a home on Hoyer Drive, where they ordered King to come out. He refused, and investigators say he fired through the front door five to six times before a single deputy returned fire and struck him.
King is hospitalized and faces multiple counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer. The sheriff’s office says the investigation is active, and McDonald’s has not responded to media inquiries. No bystanders or deputies were injured in the confrontation.
