A Sarasota County courtroom is now handling a very different case than the one filed in September. Walter Lee Edgerton III, 83, of Venice, was initially charged with murder after his wife was found dead in their home. Court records now show that charge reduced to manslaughter with a weapon. A judge set bond at $50,000 in an order filed Oct. 9, along with conditions barring him from possessing firearms and requiring him to surrender a valid passport.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Edgerton called 911 on Sept. 16 and told detectives his wife had been living with a chronic illness and had asked him to end her suffering. Responders found her in a recliner with a gunshot wound to the head. Edgerton had pleaded not guilty to murder.
The case is scheduled to move forward with a hearing on March 22, 2027, and a jury trial on April 5, 2027. More than a legal story, it raises questions plenty of Suncoast families confront privately: what does caregiving cost, and where does the law draw the line between mercy and crime?
