Sarasota Police Target High-Crash Zones: What Drivers, Walkers, and Bikers Need to Know

SHARE NOW

Sarasota Police are ramping up traffic safety enforcement in the areas where crashes happen most, and the locations weren’t picked at random. Officers used crash data to identify spots with elevated incident rates and heavy pedestrian activity, meaning the enforcement zones are the roads and intersections where trouble has already shown a pattern.

The stakes are higher than a ticket. Sarasota County ranks among Florida’s top 25 counties for serious and fatal crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. That’s why the campaign’s focus is protecting everyone who shares the road: drivers, walkers, and cyclists alike. Officers say the push is education first, though they can issue warnings or citations when needed. The initiative is funded by FDOT, the University of North Florida, and the Institute of Police Technology and Management.

So what can you do? Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, keep an eye out for bicyclists, put the phone down, and follow posted speed limits and traffic signals. If you walk or bike, stay visible and follow the rules on your end too. Small habits, safer streets for everybody.
