Wendy Payne, Convicted in 2019 Husband’s Death, Arrested on New DWI Charge in Indiana

Wendy Payne, 58, was booked early Monday in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, on a driving while intoxicated charge after deputies found her parked in the middle of Van Ness Avenue. According to the arrest report, she nearly fell several times and told deputies she had been drinking at Leroy’s Tavern. A breath test at the jail measured her blood alcohol content at 0.228, nearly three times the legal limit. She was held on a $2,500 bond.

The charge carries weight because of her history. Payne was convicted of reckless homicide in 2021 for stabbing her husband Edward to death at their Evansville home in 2019, and she received five years in prison with credit for time served. She was also convicted of a DWI in Henderson in July.

Cases like this raise hard questions about sentencing, monitoring, and what happens after someone serves their time and returns to the community. Public safety, treatment access, and accountability all sit at the center of that conversation, and there are no easy answers.
