A state report out of Richmond, Virginia is raising serious questions about childcare safety after allegations that a two-year-old at Thrive Learning Center East removed a loaded handgun from an administrator’s unzipped fanny pack and put the barrel in their mouth. According to the Virginia Department of Social Services, the child had the firearm for roughly 15 seconds while three staff members were distracted, then placed it on a table near five other children.
The report says the administrator routinely brought the gun to campus and left the bag on a low stack of cots, within a toddler’s reach. Staff reportedly waited four days to report the incident, well past the state’s 24-hour requirement. An October 8 inspection also flagged unsupervised children and incomplete vaccination records. The center’s correction plan includes mandated-reporter training and a zero-tolerance firearms policy.
For families here on the Suncoast, the story is a prompt to get familiar with your own childcare provider’s safety and reporting policies, ideally before the first drop-off. Ask how incidents are documented, who is responsible for reporting, and what the firearm policy looks like in writing. No child was hurt in this case, but the margin was frighteningly thin. What questions would you want answered before trusting a daycare with your child?
