Myakka City Neighbors Pulled Pilot From Burning Helicopter Wreckage: What We Know

A quiet Thursday evening in Myakka City turned into a scene nobody expects to see outside their own window. A mosquito control helicopter went down in a homeowner’s backyard after investigators say it struck a radio tower. Homeowner Jordan Richards heard the crash seconds after the aircraft passed overhead, grabbed a flashlight, and headed outside with a neighbor. Together they lifted wreckage off the pilot and pulled him away from the fire.

The pilot, 63-year-old Issac Moore, flew mosquito control missions for Manatee County. He was the only person aboard and did not survive the crash. NTSB air safety investigator Jene Rambo says a preliminary report is expected within 30 days, though a complete picture could take at least 18 months. The wreckage was cleared from the yard Sunday afternoon.

These low-altitude spray flights are a routine part of life here on the Suncoast, especially in warmer months. This crash raises fair questions about flight paths near homes and towers, and it also leaves a story of two neighbors who ran toward a fire to help a stranger. Have you ever seen a mosquito control helicopter up close over your neighborhood? Let us know.
