Sarasota High Schoolers Take On Tony-Winning “Urinetown” for Halloween Weekend

Halloween weekend in Sarasota has a new option on the calendar, and it comes from some of the area’s youngest performers. The Players Studio is staging “Urinetown,” the Tony-winning satire, with a cast made up entirely of local high school students, freshmen through seniors. It’s a bold pick for a student company, and that’s part of the appeal.

The musical unfolds in a Gotham-like city that’s spent twenty years in drought, where private toilets are banned and residents pay for the privilege of answering nature’s call. Wrapped around that premise are songs that echo classic musical theatre styles and dance numbers built to keep an audience moving. Three Tony Awards and a shelf of other honors say the material holds up.

Director Brian Finnerty and cast members Dillon O’Callaghan and Gaby Suchan recently appeared on Suncoast View to talk about the production. For families and arts supporters looking for an affordable local outing, it’s a strong weekend choice. Tickets are available at theplayers.ludus.com.
