Two residents died and 85 were evacuated after a fire at Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton, Mississippi, on Wednesday evening. The victims were an 82-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman. Four residents were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and the fire damaged roughly 45% of the building, which is now unlivable for the near future. The cause remains under investigation, and the Clinton fire chief called rumors about malfunctioning sprinklers “not factual.”
For Suncoast families, the story carries weight. So many of our neighbors in Sarasota, Manatee, and Sarasota County communities have a parent or grandparent living in assisted care, and a tragedy like this raises fair questions about evacuation planning, alarm testing, and sprinkler systems. Experts say families should feel comfortable asking a facility for its inspection records and the date of its last fire drill. A reputable community will share that information readily.
The displaced residents in Mississippi are now being cared for by the company and local agencies, and the community there has rallied around them. Here at home, the best response is preparation: know your loved one’s building, meet the staff, and keep the conversation going.
