Bodycam Video Released in Georgia Shooting of HeeHaw the Pet Donkey: Owner Sues Officer

Bodycam video is now public in the August shooting of a 1-year-old pet donkey named HeeHaw in Cedartown, Georgia. According to the incident report, officers were on the property searching for a missing child when the donkey trotted toward them. An officer tried to scare him off with a Taser, but HeeHaw kept coming back, and officer Trenton Garner fired a single fatal shot. The missing child was later found safe at a church near the pasture.

HeeHaw’s owner, Hannah Israel, says she bottle-raised the donkey from birth and that he was approaching officers to say hello. “That would be normal for him because he’s saying hi. That’s what donkeys do,” she said. She says her farm is “definitely not the same” without him, and she is now suing Garner. The officer argues he reasonably believed HeeHaw posed an immediate threat to another officer. The case has drawn online outrage, and the family started a GoFundMe for legal fees.

For those of us in the Suncoast’s rural edges and beach communities with backyard animals, this story raises questions about how first responders read animal behavior, how quickly bodycam footage reaches the public, and where the line sits on use of force involving pets. We want to hear from local animal owners: what’s your read on this?
