The National Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial officially opened Saturday on the National Mall, just north of the Lincoln Memorial, after more than four years of construction. The monument honors the veterans of the first Gulf War and educates visitors about the 34-country coalition that defended Kuwait in 1990 and 1991.

The design was built with materials that reflect the Gulf environment and battle conditions, so the experience of walking through it echoes the desert where those troops served. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum delivered remarks at the opening, including a reminder that people left their homes and families and traveled thousands of miles because it became their duty. The ceremony also carried a hope that the country and the world would rally together for freedom again.

For the Suncoast, the memorial is personal. Many Gulf War veterans made Florida their home after their service, and they are our neighbors, coworkers, and friends. If you know someone who served in Desert Shield or Desert Storm, this might be the week to ask them about it. Do you have a Gulf War veteran in your life you would like to recognize?
