Ryan “Scooter” Gennett has a connection to this World Series that most fans would envy. He moved to the Suncoast at age 10, won a state championship at Sarasota High School under coach Clyde Metcalfe, and was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers out of high school. Now he’s watching the Series knowing Brewers manager Pat Murphy and pitching coach Chris Hook, plus a friend who serves as the Rays’ bullpen catcher.

Gennett grew up a Cincinnati Reds fan but gravitated toward the Rays after settling here. He remembers watching games at Tropicana Field from the stands as a kid, and how much bigger everything looked once he was on the field himself. His father, Joe, is especially happy to see two small-market teams on the biggest stage, noting their payrolls are nothing compared to the rest of the league.

What will Gennett be watching for? Lighting and environment, and how players adapt from park to park. It’s the kind of insight you only get from someone who has stood in that batter’s box. Who are you pulling for in this World Series?
