Snowbird Season Returns to the Suncoast: Crowded Roads, Busy Restaurants and a $3.6 Billion Boost

The seasonal migration is underway again, and it shows up everywhere from the Cortez Road causeway to the line outside your favorite downtown Sarasota restaurant. Sarasota County’s population climbs from about 487,640 to more than 570,000 during winter, a roughly 17% increase, and that’s before the day-trippers and beach crowds arrive.

The money side is substantial. Sarasota County drew about 2.71 million visitors in fiscal year 2025, and their spending of more than $2.3 billion generated nearly $3.6 billion in total economic impact. That flows to restaurants, hotels, shops, our arts scene and the small businesses that count on December through March to carry their year. The trade-off lands on U.S. 19, I-275, University Parkway, Tamiami Trail and I-75, plus beaches and parking areas from Anna Maria down to Siesta Key.

One number to keep an eye on: fiscal 2025’s visitor count was about 6.3% lower than the year before, a sign of tourism challenges that higher costs and Canadian currency rates could stretch into this season. If you’re heading out, arrive early, make reservations, and use Florida 511 to check traffic before you go.
