Kissimmee Mom Charged With Neglect After Deputies Find Four Kids Home Alone Overnight

A 9-year-old boy in Kissimmee was hospitalized after a dumbbell fell on his head on Oct. 21, and the deputies who responded to the 911 call found four children, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, home without an adult. The boy was treated and later discharged, and the children’s father took custody. Their mother, 50-year-old Irene Miller, told a deputy she had been working in Las Vegas since Oct. 18 and had arranged a babysitter from Tampa for mornings and after-school hours, but not overnight. Detectives met her flight when she returned on Oct. 23, and she was arrested on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.

The case lands in the middle of a conversation a lot of Suncoast families know too well. Childcare is expensive, work schedules are unforgiving, and plenty of households run on a patchwork of sitters, relatives and helpful neighbors. What makes this one different, according to the sheriff’s office, is the overnight gap: four kids, no adult in the house when the lights went out.

For parents working nights or traveling, the practical questions are real. Is there a backup name on the school’s contact list? Does a neighbor have your number? Do the kids know exactly who to call? Those small safeguards can be the difference between a scary night and a tragedy. We’ll be talking about where supervision ends and neglect begins on air, and we want to hear your take. Have you ever had to piece together overnight childcare? What did you do?
