Florida Surgeon Removes Prostate From 35 Miles Away in First U.S. Remote Robotic Surgery

A 66-year-old man near Orlando had his prostate removed Sunday by a surgeon who was never in the room. Dr. Vipul Patel controlled robotic surgical instruments from Advent Health Celebration in Kissimmee, 35 miles from the patient at Advent Health Mineola. It’s the first reported robotic tele-surgery in the United States, conducted as part of an FDA-authorized research study.

The same medical team previously performed a remote operation from Central Florida on a patient in Africa, and the technology could theoretically allow a surgeon to operate from anywhere in the world. For Gulf Coast communities, where the drive to a specialist can stretch well past an hour for many residents, the potential is easy to see: expert care delivered to underserved areas without the surgeon ever hitting the road.

Advent Health is careful to note that more research is needed before drawing larger conclusions, and questions about connection reliability and safety safeguards remain open. Still, Sunday’s procedure marks a genuine first. Would you trust a surgeon operating from 35 miles away? Let us know in the comments.
