The 2026 midterms have officially become the most expensive election cycle in U.S. history for political advertising. According to AdImpact, spending has reached an estimated $11.21 billion just days before Election Day, surpassing the $11.2 billion spent across the entire 2024 presidential race. That’s also about $2.3 billion more than the 2022 midterms.

Competitive Senate races in traditionally red states are driving the surge. Texas has set a record for the most expensive nonpresidential race ever at more than $560 million in ad spending, and Ohio has crossed the $500 million mark. Republicans hold an overall edge of roughly $5.18 billion to $4.77 billion for Democrats, with nearly $450 million of the Republican total coming from Elon Musk.

With less than a week to go, the spending shows no sign of slowing. One George Washington University professor calls the cycle a test of whether money or messaging matters more, since Republicans have the financial advantage while Democrats are running against the administration. What’s your take: do record ad budgets actually sway voters, or do most people tune them out? Let us know in the comments.
