Gout on the Suncoast: Why That Painful Big Toe May Be a Warning Sign for Your Heart

Gout is one of the most common and most painful forms of arthritis, and it usually announces itself in the big toe. Uric acid builds up in the blood, crystals form in the joint, and the immune system attacks those crystals as if they were foreign objects. That attack, according to Dr. Rhea Rogers, is what produces the intense inflammation and throbbing pain.

What many people don’t realize is that gout is often more than a joint problem. Dr. Rogers says it can be a very significant signal for underlying metabolic disease, including insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular issues. Men are more prone to gout than women because estradiol is protective before menopause, though the gap narrows with age. Diet plays a major role too: sugary foods and drinks raise fructose, which pushes insulin high and helps the body hold onto uric acid.

The encouraging part is that gout is treatable, with options including allopurinol and, per one doctor, vitamin C, quercetin and luteolin. Local voices like gerontologist Sam Cradduck and aging well coach Katherine Ambrose, along with the Alliance for Gout Awareness, are urging people to see a doctor early.
